NEW DELHI: British Prime Minister Tony Blair's wife Cherie Blair on Thursday visited the Delhi High Court.Ms. Blair reached the Court at 10 a.m. and interacted with the judges for an hour. Thereafter, Britain's First Lady accompanied by the Registrar of the Court, V.B. Gupta, and some members of the British delegation went to the Court of the Acting Chief Justice, Justice B.A. Khan, and watched the proceedings for a few minutes. Ms. Blair, herself an advocate, preferred to watch the proceedings standing. She politely refused to take a seat when requested to take one. Ms. Blair, heading a British delegation that visited the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday, said that the United Kingdom, which is in the process of formulating a legislation intended to set up a Commission for Equality and Human Rights, would like to learn from the working and experience of human rights institutions in India. Ms. Blair, who is accompanying her husband on a two-day tour of the country, met NHRC chairperson Justice A.S. Anand and senior officers of the Commission. During her interaction, she was briefed on the working role of the NHRC, and broader issues of human rights, child rights, and child-trafficking. The delegation included Mark Runacres, Deputy High Commissioner, British High Commission, and Les Dangerfield, Deputy Director, British Council.
