CHENNAI: : L. Elayaperumal, veteran Dalit leader and former president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, died at a hospital in Chidambaram on Thursday. He was 81. He is survived by three sons and five daughters. According to his son, Vetri Veeramani, a doctor, Mr. Elayaperumal suffered a fracture recently and was bedridden. He suffered a cardiac arrest in the hospital on Thursday. Born in June 1924, the late leader was drawn into the freedom struggle in the 1940s and he joined the Congress party. He was elected to the Lok Sabha thrice. During 1965-69, he headed the Union Government's Committee on Untouchability, Economic and Educational Development of the Scheduled Castes. The panel's report was noted for its insightful account of the problems and issues concerning the community. He was the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president between September 1979 and March 1980. Mr. Elayaperumal was elected from the Egmore Assembly constituency in the 1980 elections. He quit the Congress party in 1984 to run the Human Rights Party of India. In his last years, he returned to the Congress. In recognition of his services to the Dalit cause, he received the State Government's Ambedkar award in December 1998. G.K. Vasan, TNCC president, said Mr. Elayaperumal was an example of simplicity, purity and integrity in public life. The party would mourn the death for three days and fly the party flag at half-mast. N. Varadarajan, secretary of the State committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), described the passing away of Elayaperumal as a huge loss to the movement against untouchability. Thol. Thirmavalavan, Dalit Panthers general secretary, said the death was an irreparable loss to the country.
