BELGAUM: Barring a minor incident, the 10-day Ganesha festivities took off on an enthusiastic note with devotees and revellers escorting the idols, dancing and chanting "Ganapati Bappa Morya" and bursting crackers enroute to their respective mandals on Wednesday. Six persons have been arrested for allegedly causing tension and disturbing communal harmony by attacking a Ganesha procession on Wednesday night. The police are on the look out for other persons responsible for the incident. Police said some people were injured when a Ganesha idol being taken from Patil Galli to Revenue colony in Malmaruti Extension, was reportedly pelted with stones when the procession approached a place of worship in Kamat Galli. The windshield of the truck carrying the idol was also damaged. Police rushed to spot and took control over the situation.
Meanwhile, police sub-inspector B.Y. Gudaji and constable Y.L. Poojary have been suspended for laxity in security arrangements.
