India, China sign anti-terror MoU

P.S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE: India and China on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding to combat terrorism and drug trafficking as also gun-running along the border areas.

The MoU was signed by Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Chinese State Councillor and Minister for Public Security Zhou Yongkang in Beijing at a meeting that lasted about two hours.

Mr. Patil is now on a five-day visit to China under the ongoing process of "developing and diversifying" bilateral relations.

Mr. Patil told The Hindu over telephone from Beijing that "the MoU provides that both countries will cooperate with each other in controlling and containing terrorism." The two countries would pursue the agenda of cooperation by sharing information and each other's training facilities.

It was also agreed that steps would be taken to control trade in narcotics. India and China "will cooperate" on matters relating to "gun-running in the border areas" too.
