BANGALORE: There is a need for more sensitivity and social activism among people so that those who do not have access to basic facilities can be helped, Governor T.N. Chaturvedi said here on Thursday.

Mr. Chaturvedi launched the website www.save.org.in of the voluntary organisation Social and Voluntary Services Empowerment (S.A.V.E.) at the Raj Bhavan. A mobile dental clinic, a mobile speciality clinic and a mobile health education unit, which will be used by S.A.V.E. to reach medical facilities and health awareness messages to rural areas, were also inaugurated on the occasion.

Speaking at the function, Mr. Chaturvedi said voluntary services and resources given by charitable organisations or socially inclined persons can go a long way in alleviating the pain of the have-nots, especially during disasters and calamities.

Referring to the deaths of farmers in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and deaths owing to epidemics in various parts of the country, Mr. Chaturvedi said social activism should be targeted not only to give immediate benefits to the affected people but also aimed at thinking of ways and means to prevent such problems.

J.K. Rao, Chief Commissioner, Income Tax, said public-private partnership in healthcare and education is the need of the hour. Information technology can be used to reach medical facilities and education to remote areas, he said.

B.R. Anil Kumar, chairman of S.A.V.E., said the organisation will shortly set up a geriatric hospital to provide treatment to senior citizens.

Chandrashekar Kambar, MLC and noted poet, was present.
