Rs.160 cr. for development projects in Karaikal dist.

All works will be completed this year, says Pondy Chief Minister

KARAIKAL: The Pondicherry Government has allocated Rs.160 crores for Karaikal district in the Union Territory of Pondicherry for carrying out various development works and welfare projects and all these works will be completed this year, said Chief Minister of Pondicherry N.Rengasamy, here on Wednesday.

Talking to presspersons after holding a review meeting with officials of various departments about the progress of various schemes being implemented in the region, the Chief Minister said that the Pondicherry Government had allocated Rs.160 crores for the development of Karaikal district this year against Rs.80 crores made in the previous year.

Explaining some of the development projects for Karaikal district, Mr. Rengasamy said that the construction a fishing harbour would commence soon and pointed out that the techno-commercial feasibility study for establishing an airport at Karaikal was under way.

The Chief Minister said that a multi-crore plan had been formulated for developing Tirunallar as a temple town with all modern facilities and pointed out that an underground drainage system had also been planned for Karaikal at a cost of Rs.34 crores.

Community college

Mr. Rengasamy said that a modern community college, based on United States model, would be started at Karaikal in the next academic year.

The Chief Minister pointed out that community colleges were popular in America that played a vital role in manpower development.

The motto of the community college at Karaikal would be `Education for employment' through skill formation.

The College would promote the general educational well-being of the community and ensure wider opportunities for higher education, provide job-oriented courses, he added.

The review meeting was attended among others by Ezhumalai, Minister for Local Administration, M. Chandrakasu, Minister for Social Welfare, A.V. Subramanian, Deputy Speaker of Pondicherry Assembly, C.S. Kairwal, Chief Secretary, Pondicherry Government, Dr. S. Sundaravadivelu, Karaikal Collector, and A.M.H. Nazeem, Kamalakannan, Nalamaharajan and Sivakumar, MLAs.
