500 pilgrims take this new `vow' at Vinayaka temple, Kanipakam

TIRUPATI: "Sri Ganesha deeksha", a new form of vow, introduced at the Varasiddhi Vinayaka temple in Kanipakam, situated 20 km from Chittoor, got an overwhelming response from the devotees.

The deeksha is conceived on the lines of "Ayyappa deeksha" of Sabarimala and "Govindamala" of Tirupati, as part of the annual Brahmotsavams in the temple which coincides with the Vinayaka Chavithi celebrations. The devotees of Lord Vinayaka taking the `deeksha' are expected to be austere, celibate, clean, honest and stay from all forms of vices. As many as 500 devotees have taken the vow on its introduction on Wednesday.

The temple, situated in a small village, has been attracting huge crowds for the past four years.

The Kanipakam temple management has made all arrangements for the smooth conduct of the Brahmotsavams, which began on Wednesday. Drinking water taps, toilets and bath showers have been put in place. Elaborate security has been provided.

The Pakala circle has deputed five sub-inspectors, twelve Assistant SIs and a huge chunk constabulary forces, while the Chittoor sub-division has sent a contingent comprising twenty armed policemen, traffic constables, women constables and home guards.

Spruced up

According to the executive officer, G.Kesavulu, the temple was decorated at a cost of Rs.15 lakh. Cultural programmes were being organised on the occasion. The processional deity of Vinayaka will be taken in the town on the traditional celestial carriers like mouse, peacock, serpent, bull, elephant, horse, and also a chariot during the fete, that lasts for twenty days.

The APSRTC is running extra services from Tirupati and Chittoor towns.
