Protests against fuel price hike

TDP, CPI (M) and BJP activists take to streets, demand rollback

NELLORECHITTOORKADAPA: In a unique protest against the sudden hike in petroleum prices, functionaries of Bhartiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha submitted a `representation' to an idol of Lord Vinayaka at the Muttukur bus stand centre of Nellore town.

The morcha described the hike as a `gift' to people on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi and pointed out that only the Almighty can control the `dictatorship' of Congress party. The Telugu Desam Party activists also took out a protest march from VRC centre to Gandhi statue and strongly condemned the Government's move to hike the prices.

Meanwhile, it is estimated that the burden on the consumers of petroleum products in Nellore district would be round Rs. 4 crores per month. While there are 177 petrol bunks in the district, the average daily consumption of petrol is said to be around 55,000 litres and 4.50 lakh litres diesel, mainly by the farming sector. The RTC would also bear a heavy burden.

Traffic disrupted

NELLORECHITTOORKADAPA: The activists of Telugu Desam party district unit, including leaders M.P. Adikesavulu, Rajya Sabha member Durga Ramakrishna, MLA A.S.Manohar and party State election Committee member B.N. Rajasimhulu staged dharna and disrupted traffic near Gandhi statue on Prakasam Road here on Thursday protesting against the hike. Stating that the hike would have a cascading effect, they demanded that the Government rollback the prices and threatened to intensify their agitation if their demand was met.

Minister's effigy burnt

NELLORECHITTOORKADAPA: The TDP took out an impressive rally in Kadapa town decrying the fifth hike in 16 months.

Rajya Sabha members -- C. Ramachandraiah and S. Ramamuni Reddy - polit bureau member, K. Sivananda Reddy, district TDP President, R. Ramesh Kumar Reddy, former RTC Regional Chairman, Y. Subbarayudu and others participated in the rally.
