SHIMLA: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh surprised thousands of literacy activists, including the neo-literates, by participating in their demand rally marking the International Literacy Day here on Thursday. The literacy ambassadors and neo-literates in the State under the aegis of Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti (HGVS) are fighting for the implementation of Continuing Education Programme (CEP). Mr. Singh was impressed by the turn out at the rally and gave a patient hearing to the NGO activists. He acknowledged the role of NGOs, especially the HGVS, for spreading literacy in the State. The Chief Minister said literacy in the backward hill State had gone up from 8 to 84 percent after the independence mainly due to the proactive role of women folk, the "Matrashakti".
