CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Government on Wednesday suspended three police officers for "lapses'' in handling rioting in Gohana and Panchkula last week and sought an explanation from the former Sonepat Deputy Commissioner, S.K. Goyal, and the then Sonepat Superintendent of Police, Anil Rao, for their "failure to anticipate the violence despite reports of tension in the area''. According to an official spokesman, Gohana's Deputy Superintendent of Police, Raunki Ram, and Station House Officer, Satpal, who had been transferred soon after the disturbances in which 54 houses of Dalits were burnt by a mob on August 31, have been placed under suspension for "acts of omission in performing their duty and their failure to prevent rioting, arson and loss to property''. The Government has also suspended Panchkula Station House Officer, Surjit Kumar, for failing to prevent rioting and damage to property on September 2 during the Haryana Bandh when a mob protesting the Gohana incidents went on the rampage. The Hooda Government has already ordered an enquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the Gohana violence which had evoked widespread criticism for the attack on Dalits.
