Woman poisons child, ends life

KARIMNAGAR: A housewife administered pesticide to her two infant children and also consumed it due to financial problems in Peddamapeta village of Kalwa Srirampur mandal on Wednesday.

The woman and her one-year-old girl died while undergoing treatment. Her three-year-old son is battling for life at Warangal MGM hospital.

Reports reaching said that the deceased, P. Sunitha (22) took her two children, Ellesh (3) and Deepika (one) to the village outskirts and administered pesticide. __Staff Reporter

Ornaments stolen from temple

KADAPA: Burglars stole gold and silver ornaments worth about Rs. 11 lakhs from the sanctum sanctorum and hundi from Sri Sai temple near Neelakantharaopet in Ramapuram mandal in the early hours of Wednesday.

A golden headgear on Sri Shirdi Saibaba icon weighing one kg, an `utsava vigraham', two silver lion figurines weighing four kg., a 70-gm gold chain, ten 20-gm medallions were stolen, the police said. — Staff Reporter

Lightning kills pregnant woman

VIZIANAGARAM: A 25-year-old pregnant woman, K. Eswaramma, was killed and five others suffered burns when lightning struck them at Amarayavalasa in Mentada mandal on Wednesday. According to police they were engaged in paddy transplantation work at that time. In Duvvupeta village near Gara Trinath (30) and Lakshmana (35) were killed when thunderbolt struck them. Three more persons - all women— in Kousalyapuram and Mathala villages in Kotturu mandal were also killed in a similar way.

In another incident, Girijala Pydi Raju (26) of SSR Peta in Gurla mandal was electrocuted while working at a `Vinayaka pandal' on Wednesday night. — Correspondent.

Naval chopper force lands

VISAKHAPATNAM: A Chetak helicopter IN-426 of Eastern Naval Command, which was on a routine sortie force-landed near Coast Guard jetty in Naval Dockyard on Wednesday. None of the four occupants were injured. The helicopter was piloted by Commander Negi and Lieutenant Commander Kadiyan. — Staff Reporter

Robbery in ex-MLA's house

ADONI (KURNOOL DT): An eight-member gang struck at the house of former TDP MLA, Meenakshi Naidu, at Postal Colony in Adoni town in Kurnool district on Wednesday night and robbed the family of valuables worth Rs 10 lakhs. Mr. Naidu was not in the house at that time. Police said 100 tolas gold and 7 kg silver were stolen.

Maths Congress

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Andhra Pradesh Society for Mathematical Sciences will hold its XIV Congress at the GITAM College of Engineering from Friday. About 170 delegates from all over the State are expected to participate in the three-day Congress. Andhra University Vice-Chancellor L. Venugopal Reddy will inaugurate the Congress.

Broadband facility

Kakinada: The BSNL has commissioned the broadband facility for the Port City, according to General Manager Telecom. The facility was already created for Rajahmundry during June third week under the first phase. Now under the second phase, the facility has been extended to the district headquarters, with the efforts and initiative of the local MP Mangapathi Pallamraju. He said that the facility was provided to the subscribers of Kakinada main exchange and also for those in Ramanaiahpet, Jagannaickpur, Venkatnagar, Madhuranagar and Indrapalem exchange areas.

Sales agent waylaid and robbed

KADAPA: Miscreants waylaid and robbed a sales agent of private firm of Rs. 1.20 lakhs at Neelapuram in Duvvur mandal on Wednesday night. Four persons allegedly threw chilli powder on Srinivasulu Reddy, who was going on a two-wheeler and fled with the money, according to the police. On a complaint, the Mydukur Rural CI, Ramachandra, inspected the scene of offence. The Duvvur police registered a case.

Five killed in various mishaps

Nellore: Five persons were killed in different mishaps in the district on Wednesday. A labourer was killed when a wall suddenly collapsed in VNR panchayat limits of Bogole mandal, whereas in Kovur, a 20-year-old person died after he reportedly fell down from a moving train. At Bitragunta, two persons were run over by trains and another person, in a similar incident at Gudur. A remand prisoner at Nellore Central Prison died at Tirupati while undergoing treatment at Ruia Hospital.

Depositors asked to claim interest

KURNOOL: The Liquidator and Cooperative Joint Registrar, S. Narayana, asked the depositors of Kurnool Urban Cooperative Credit Bank to make a claim for interest on the deposits for the period between rejection of application of the bank by the Reserve Bank of India (17.3.2001) and the date of announcement of liquidation of the bank (26.7.2002).

The date of maturity of deposits would also be taken into consideration for payment of interest. The depositors were asked to make a claim before September 30 if their deposit maturity date coincided with the two dates.

Petrol station robbed

KURNOOL: An unidentified gang robbed the staff of a petrol filling station of Rs 6,000 at Allagadda in Kurnool district last night. According to reports, three masked men armed with knives and toy pistols raided the filling station on the Nandyal road.

Red sanders seized

KADAPA: Forest officials arrested 13 persons who felled red sander trees in Peddasila forest beat in Mydukur mandal and seized red sanders worth of about Rs. 2 lakhs on Wednesday.

Those arrested were Dara Veeraswamy, Pade Chiranjeevi, Naguru Venkatesu, Vallakunta Venkatesu, Ramabhakthala Ankaiah, Bapana Venkataramana, Pullaiah, Kotaiah, Chandra, Penchalaiah, Vankaiah, Ankaiah and Kaliyapuri Ankaiah, according to forest officials. The seized red sanders were taken to Vanipenta range office.

Diabetes awareness camp

ONGOLE: Diabetes awareness camp will be held at Ambedkar Bhavan in Ongole at 10 a.m. on Friday. N.G. Sastry, an expert from Chennai, will talk about prevention and tackling of the disease. People can get their random blood sugar checked by paying Rs. 20 at the camp, said G.P. Neelakantham, Chief Executive Officer, Prakasam Zilla Parishad. - Staff Reporter

Mentally challenged children identified

ELURU: The District Education Officer, P. Parvati, on Thursday said that about 5,000 mentally challenged children were identified in the district. Speaking at a programme, she said an action plan was devised for enrolment of 4,200 children with mentally retarded growth in schools even as 720 children still remained out of school. The action plan was intended to focus on imparting life coping skills among the mentally challenged children. - Staff Reporter

CPI(M) dharna

Kakinada: A large number of Comminist Party of India(Marxist) workers under the auspices of the party city committee staged a dharna at the Karanam's junction here on Thursday protesting against the hike in petrol and diesel prices.

Party nominee for the 49th division Gollamudi Nageswerarao, city unit secretary Vasamsetti Suryarao, led the dharna. The demonstrators raised slogans denouncing the Government move. - Correspondent

Hostel for tribal

boys, girls

ADILABAD: Four new hostels for tribal boys and girls would start functioning from next academic year in Adilabad, Warangal and Khammam districts. The hostels will be built at a cost of Rs. 20 lakhs each from the Giri Pragathi funds will be located at Adilabad (one each for boys and girls) and one each at Warangal and Bhadrachalam. One more hostel for tribal students will come up later that year in Hyderabad.

Girl ends life

Kakinada: A teenaged girl Churla Haritha (16) has reportedly committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance at her house in P.J. Nagaram under Kotananduru Police Station limits.

She died in the Government general hospital here in the wee hours of Thursday.

The Kotananduru police registered a case. - Correspondent

Train halt

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Hatia-Yeshvantpur-Hatia Express (train no.8613/8614) will stop at Parvathipuram station from September 14 according to the Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (Waltair) of the East Coast Railway.

The 8613 Hatia-Yeshwantpur train will arrive at Parvathipuram at 2 pm and depart at 2.02 pm. The 8614 Yeshwantpur-Hatia express will arrive at Parvatipuram at 6.24 am and leave at 6.26 am. - Staff Reporter
