BANGALORE:
Mayor R. Narayanaswamy on Thursday announced a special literacy programme for slum dwellers, pourakarmikas and health workers appointed by contractors. Speaking after inaugurating a procession organised by the Bangalore City Literacy Committee as part of the International Literacy Day, the Mayor said the BMP staff will impart education to children of slum dwellers, pourakarmikas and health workers.
"We are determined to achieve 100 per cent literacy in the city. Pointing out that a majority of the workers employed by the private garbage contractors are illiterate, the Mayor said: "Of the 7.93 lakhs slum dwellers, over 2.67 lakhs in the 15 to 35 age group are illiterate. We have decided to impart education to this group and make them literate."
