One killed, six injured in attack

VIJAYAWADA: One person was killed and six others injured when a rowdy-sheeter and his gang returning from a Ganesh immersion attacked a group of people here on Thursday night.

According to the police, the gang attacked the group hailing from Ramnagar near Bhavanipuram in the city on their way back after immersing the Ganesh idol in river Krishna.

The gang members said to be an inebriated condition beat up the people with sticks. In the melee T. Narasimha Rao (40), a physically handicapped person, was killed on the spot.

However, the police ruled out any communal overtones.

Situation under control

The Assistant Commissioner of Police, S.M.Vali, rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control.

He also took with him members of the Ganesh Procession Committee to identify the assailants. The victim's body was shifted to the Government General Hospital and the injured were admitted to the hospital.
