NEW DELHI: Expressing concern over resignation of the University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS) Principal, Sunder Ayyahgari, on Wednesday, the Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) on Thursday extended supported to the teachers and students of UCMS, and demanded that the University take all necessary steps to ensure that the college is not handed over to Delhi Government. The decision was taken at an emergency meeting called by DUTA on Thursday to discuss certain important issues including the recent University Grants Commission's (UGC) recent notification asking all college principals to implement the "no work, no pay" for the strike called by teachers' on August 8 against police lathi-charge on workers in Gurgaon. Accusing the University administration of turning a blind eye to the problems of UCMS students and teachers, DUTA said a delegation would meet the Vice-Chancellor to discuss the UCMS matter with him. Mr. Giri had reportedly submitted his resignation after disagreements with the University officials over the handing over of the college to Delhi Government. Another important issue discussed during the meeting was the UGC letter, which it was felt amounts to political victimisation and demonstrates an authoritarian and anti-democratic attitude. "The UGC, by choosing to send such a communication particularly on this strike, has revealed that instead of acting to uphold the values of higher learning and democracy it choosing to become an instrument of the State to suffocate the voices of reason and progress,'' the Democratic Teachers' Front had said in a statement issued on Wednesday.
