KOZHIKODE: The Bharatiya Janata Party has appealed to the Election Commission and the State Government to inquire into the circumstances in which LDF candidates got elected unopposed during the ongoing process for local bodies poll in Kannur district. Alleging rampant foul play in the victories already posted by CPI(M) candidates in 42 seats in municipalities and grama panchayats in Kannur for want of opposition in the election, BJP State president P.S. Sreedharan Pillai alleged "it was CPI(M)'s muscle power that has helped its candidates to win unopposed". He went on to allege that there had been instances of the CPI(M) forcing UDF candidates to withdraw their nominations so that its candidate would win unopposed. The BJP candidates were also facing threats in some places, he said. The BJP leader remarked "free and air elections would not be possible in Kannur district as the entire region is in the control of the CPI(M)" and sought an inquiry into the happenings in the election scene there.
