Special team formed to arrest accused

Kochi: Thiruvananthapuram City Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham on Friday informed the Kerala High Court that a special team had been constituted to nab the accused wanted in connection with the sexual harassment of the wife of a patient admitted to the Thiruvananthapuram Mental Health Centre. In a statement, he informed Justice K. Padmanabhan Nair that a case had been registered against the three casual employees of the centre. He said the investigation was proceeding in the right direction. The victim had been subject to medical examination. The monitoring committee for the hospital headed by the Thiruvananthapuram District Judge also filed a statement regarding the incident. The statement said that there were lapses on the part of the Superintendent of the centre in taking prompt action. The report also alleged that the women staff had connived with the accused in the incident. — Staff Reporter

Assumes charge

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: M.S. Varghese, a senior officer of the Indian Information Service, has assumed charge as Editor of Malayalam Yojana, a Central Planning Commission publication. He has served as News Editor of Thiruvananthapuram Doordarshan and All India Radio. Prior to his posting at Yojana, he was News Editor at All India Radio, New Delhi. — Staff Reporter

Sabarimala temple to open for eight days

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Sabarimala temple will remain open for eight days this month on account of pujas in connection with Onam and the Malayalam month of Kanni. The temple will be opened at 5.30 p.m. on September 13. It will be closed at 10 p.m. on September 21. In addition to the usual pujas, padi puja, udayasthamana puja and neyyabhishekam will be performed from September 14 to 21. An Onam feast is being arranged at sannidhanam on first Onam day on September 14 as an offering of the melsanthi. There will be feasts on the remaining three days of Onam also. — Special Correspondent

New U.S. Consul General

CHENNAI: David T. Hopper has assumed office as the new U.S. Consul General for South India. He succeeds Richard D. Haynes, who departed from Chennai on transfer to Philippines. Mr. Hopper, who most recently was the principal officer at the U.S. Consulate General in Melbourne, Australia, had earlier served at the U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai. The new Consul General joined the U.S. Department of State in 1975 and has served overseas in Germany, India, the United Arab Emirates, Sweden, China and Poland. — Special Correspondent

Delimitation of constituencies upheld

Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Friday upheld the order of the Delimitation Commission of India delimiting Assembly constituencies in the State, especially Kannur constituency. The Bench comprising Chief Justice Rajiv Gupta and Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan upheld the notification issued on May 31,2005 while allowing an appeal filed by the Chief Electoral Officer against a single judge's interim decision to hear the writ petition challenging the notification. The writ was filed by Sunny Joseph, president, Kannur District Congress Committee. The petitioner alleged that the delimitation had been done in the most unscientific manner and without any application of mind.— Staff Reporter

Applications invited for part time B.Tech KOLLAM: The TKM College of Engineering has started distributing the application forms for the part time B.Tech. courses in Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The duly applications forms should reach the Technical Education Directorate by September 20.

Biotechnology forum inaugurated

KOLLAM: H ead of the Botany Department of the Kerala University, G.M. Nair inaugurated the Bio Technology Forum attached to the Zoology Department of the Fatima Mata National College here on Wednesday. On the occasion the first rank holder of the B.Sc. Bio technology (Vocational), Jinu Raj, was felicitated. College principal C.K. Felix delivered the keynote address.

Two run over in separate accidents

THRISSUR: A 55-year-old man was run over by a truck at Konnakkuzhy, near Chalakkudy, on Friday. The police identified the deceased as Kalleli Veettil Devassy. In another accident, a 53-year old woman was run over by a private bus when she was crossing the road at Puthenchira Muruikkad junction, near Mala, on Friday morning. The deceased was identified as Sofia, wife of Peechan Jose. — Staff Reporter

Kozhikode: Musician Ousepachan has been chosen for the Mullasery Raju Sangeetha Puraskaram instituted by the Kozhikode-based Mullasery Raju Suhruth Sangham. The award consistsof Rs.25,000 in cash and a citation.— Staff Reporter
