Pune native to donate Rs. 4 crores

TIRUMALA: Mukund Das Lohia, a native of Pune and an ardent devotee of Lord Venkateswara, has expressed his willingness to donate a whopping Rs. 4 crores to the TTD. Stating this to mediapersons here on Friday, Tirumala-based Special Officer A.V. Dharma Reddy said that another devotee, Balakrishna Singhvi, a native of Mumbai and family friend of Mr. Lohia, donated Rs. 10 lakhs. - Staff Reporter

No bus fare hike, says RTC chairman

Hyderabad: The APSRTC chairman, Gone Prakash Rao, has ruled out any hike in the bus fares. He said the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has categorically ruled out any fare hike till March 2006. Talking to presspersons here on Friday, Mr.Rao said reports appearing in a section of the press in this regard were wrong.

Woman, daughter die of malaria?

VIZIANAGARAM: A. Seethamma (35) and her 10-year-old daughter Lakshmi died reportedly of malaria at Andra village in Mentada mandal late on Wednesday night. The two have been suffering from fever for over a week. When their condition turned critical, Seethamma's husband Gompa Swamy tried to admit them in KGH, Visakhapatnam, but they died on way to the hospital. - Correspondent

5-year RI for one in rape case

KADAPA: District SC/ST Court Sessions Judge B.A. Prakash Rao has sentenced Chenchaiahgari Sankaraiah alias Sekhar in a case of abduction and gang rape of a mentally unstable SC girl, who was speech impaired, to five years of rigorous imprisonment. He ordered five years of RI for gang rape and three years imprisonment for abduction and said the sentences would run concurrently. - Staff Reporter

Janashakti commander surrenders

NALGONDA: The Janashakti Rajanna group's Polavaram area commander, Ramula Saidulu alias Vijay alias Madhu surrendered before the Nalgonda police on Friday. Hailing from Yerragaddalagudem in Tipparthy mandal, Saidulu became member of the Janashakti's Bayyaram area committee in 2001. Saidulu told the police that he was vexed with the `impractical ideology' of the leadership. - Staff Reporter

Naidu to campaign in Kadapa district

KADAPA: The former Chief Minister and Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu will campaign for municipal elections in Kadapa district on September 12 and 13.

Mr. Naidu will participate in a roadshow at Rajampet at 5.30 p.m. on September 12 and in Kadapa at 7.30 p.m. He will make night halt in Kadapa. The TDP supremo will campaign in Proddatur at 9 a.m. on September 13 and at Pulivendula at 1 p.m., and will later proceed to Tadpatri in Anantapur district. - Staff Reporter

Hospital panel meet

KADAPA: Collector G. Asok Kumar on Friday exhorted Kadapa Government hospital doctors to extend proper medicare to poor patients with a humanistic approach.

Patients were charged Rs. 75 for ECG earlier, but it was free now, he said in the Hospital Development Committee meeting here. He wanted nominal fee fixed for X-Ray, blood and phlem tests. He directed daily cleaning of the hospital premises and toilets and upkeep of sanitation.

Mr. Asok Kumar suggested conduct of more ophthalmic and orthopaedic surgeries in addition to buttonhole operations. Pregnant women of rural areas, who thronged the hospital, should be extended medicare promptly, he said. - Staff Reporter

Puri visits TTD

TIRUMALA: A 13-member official team, headed by S.C. Mahapatra, Chief Executive Officer, Sri Jagannatha Swamy temple, Puri, on Friday closeted with top TTD officials and discussed about the present administrative set-up managing the famous sacred shrine of Lord Venkateswara, Tirumala.

The team discussed various issues, including developmental activities and charitable schemes being implemented by the TTD.

The TTD Executive Officer, A.P.V.N. Sarma explained to the visiting team the functioning of the reception wing, online darshan system, kalyanakatta, vigilance and security wing, Sri Vari seva and the salient features of various charitable schemes like Annadanam and Pranadanam by making a power-point presentation. - Staff Reporter

Man hacked to death

KADAPA: A 26-year-old youth, Edukondalu, was hacked to death allegedly by his relatives following his bid to set ablaze his maternal uncle's hut at Moragudi village in Jammalamadugu mandal on Thursday night.

A vagabond, Edukondalu, allegedly set his uncle, Subrahmanyam's hut on fire, but the latter managed to put off the fire. When he threatened to set afire the hut again, his relatives stabbed him to death with knives, according to the police. - Staff Reporter Boy killed in road accident

SRIKAKULAM: Seven-year-old Gedala Raju, a second standard student died on spot while Rohini (7) sustained grievous injuries when the school jeep in which they were going turned turtle near Simmapeta village in Gara mandal on Friday morning.

The jeep, belonging to a private convent school in Simmapeta village was carrying some 20 students when the mishap occurred. The injured were treated at the Government hospital here. - Correspondent

Farmers' protest

KHAMMAM: Farmers staged a protest near the power sub-station at Karepalli till late night on Thursday demanding restoration of power supply to Perepalli village. The village was without power supply for many days. The farmers were annoyed as the pump sets were lying idle. They damaged furniture in the office forcing the police to intervene.

TTD Executive Officer inspects cottages

TIRUMALA: TTD Executive Officer A.P.V.N. Sarma on Friday inspected various cottages and guesthouses at Tirumala.

During the four-hour inspection, Mr. Sarma instructed the heads of reception, health and engineering departments to ensure better upkeep and proper maintenance of cottages and guesthouses. - Staff Reporter
