Stir against Smart City

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: : A combine of social and environmental organisations has decided to launch an agitation against the Government decision to go ahead with the proposed Smart City project.

A press release issued by these organisations said that there was no transparency in the project. The Government has not explained how it will use the 200 acres of the total 300 acres of land to be allotted to the Dubai Internet City.

The decision to hand over the Infopark will cause huge loss to the exchequer, the release said.

Representatives of the social organisations said that the Government would not be able to recover the land given on lease for 99 years to the Dubai Internet City.

The Government had said that the land would be recovered if the company failed to provide 33,000 jobs within 10 years.

The release said that the agreement for a moratorium on new IT parks in Kochi and nearby areas would affect the development of the city.

The social organisations expressed doubts over the silence maintained by the Opposition and youth organisations on the project.
