VISAKHAPATNAM: Exercise holds the key to diabetes management, and it has benefits like weight reduction, better blood-sugar control, reduced insulin needs, reduction in high blood pressure risk and decrease in cholesterol and other body fats like triglycerides. Giving this tip to diabetics at an awareness camp on kidney problems in diabetics here on Saturday, Diabetes Foundation founder-president Anuradha Reddy said: "Exercise improves the circulation of blood throughout the body, lowering the risk of a stroke.'' According to her, a diabetic can prevent damage to his or her kidneys by keeping their blood glucose levels under control, and patients who maintain those levels can reduce the risk of kidney disease by 35 to 40 per cent. She said that the early symptom of a kidney disease was the presence of a small amount of protein in urine. Diabetics were 20 times more prone to contract end-stage renal disease than non-diabetics, and that disease meant kidney failure, Ms. Reddy said.
