NEW DELHI: The Central Government on Thursday assured the vanaspati oil industry that it would look into the demand for appointing the National Agriculture Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) instead of the State Trading Corporation as the canalising agent for import of vanaspati from the neighbouring countries. Giving the assurance on NAFED at the 28th annual general meeting of the Indian Vanaspati Producers Association (IVPA), Food Secretary, R. N. Das, however, said that the demand for restructuring customs duty on imported crude palm oil (CPO) would have to be studied in depthas it had more ramifications than one. IVPA President, J. K. Khaitan, sought reduction in the inverted customs duty, which, he said, was 80 per cent on crude palm oil, while the duty on vanaspati was 30 per centto the advantage of importing agencies from neighbouring countries.
