Khaleda blames anti-national forces for blasts

Haroon Habib

DHAKA: Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has said that those who wanted to brand the country as a "religious extremist nation" had staged the August 17 country-wide bomb blasts, wearing the veil of Islam.

Making her first statement on the attacks three weeks after the incident, the Prime Minister said in Parliament, "Those who are envious of Bangladesh's economic progress have committed this heinous act." Ms Khaleda Zia said, "The perpetrators of the August 17 blasts are trying to hide under the garb of religion. But they won't be able to conceal them under any mask or symbol. The nucleus of this conspiracy will soon be unveiled."

She expressed the fear that terrorist acts might take a dangerous turn and called for unity of the people, including the Opposition parties.
