Staff Reporter

Students, colleagues point accusing finger at police official

ANANTAPUR S: tudents and staff of Bhramarabika Girls Junior College of Guntakal staged a dharna in front of the MRO's office on Saturday protesting against the alleged manhandling of a lecturer of their college by the police on Friday night.

They demanded action against the DSP and submitted a memorandum to the MRO. They condemned the "highhanded" attitude of a police officer. According to the police and information reaching here, the DSP of Guntakal K.V. Mohan Rao, the RDO of Anantapur, A.V. Ramprasad, and other staff went to the college around 5.30 p.m. on Friday to examine the premises as a couple of polling stations were to be set up for the municipal elections. As they found only the Telugu lecturer Naga Shayanam they asked him as to show many polling booths could be set up in their college. Expressing ignorance, the lecturer told officials that he was not aware of it. But the DSP reportedly reacted harshly and when the lecturer protested against the DSP's attitude, he was bundled into the police jeep and was taken to the two town police station.

DSP denies charge

The lecturer's father Sesha Shayanam who was working as a head constable, tried to prevent the police from taking his son and threatened to commit suicide if his son was not let off. He reportedly "banged" his head against the police station wall and even as he was bleeding, the police shifted the lecturer to the one town police station and allegedly thrashed him till late in the night and let him off. Meanwhile, the DSP claimed that the lecturer not only behaved rudely with the officials but also tried to "attack" the policemen following which he was taken to the police station and let off after registering a case.
