KOZHIKODE: T.R. Krishnan, council member, Institution of Engineers (India) inaugurated the Engineers' Day Celebrations organised by the Calicut Local Centre of the Institution here on Saturday. The Day is being celebrated by the Institution of Engineers (India) all over the country to commemorate the birthday of legendary engineer M.Visvesararaya. R. Ravindran Nair, principal, Calicut University Institute of Engineering and Technology (CUIET), while delivering a special address on the topic, `World Trade Organisation and Engineering Profession' on the occasion observed that compatibility and equivalence to globally acknowledged standards are considered to be the key issues in the global mobility of engineers. Mr. Ravindran Nair said that the WTO system believes in the professional development of engineers and it has prescribed certain mechanisms for professional development. This ensures the global mobility of engineers. Mr. Ravindran Nair pointed out that WTO had started professional development initiatives way back in 1995. These initiatives were aimed at accelerating the global mobility of engineering professionals. For example, academia, industry and Government closely collaborate in Japan to establish an integrated system that supports life-long professional development of engineers. This system includes accreditation of University education, training of entry-level engineers, prescribing and providing professional qualification.
