SRINAGAR: Five soldiers from the Rashtriya Rifles were killed and seven others injured when militants ambushed their convoy near Awantipore on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. The condition of the injured jawans is stated to be stable. Defence spokesman Lt. Col. V.K. Batra told The Hindu that three jawans were killed instantly after two militants hiding in a bylane opened indiscriminate fire on the convoy and lobbed grenades. Nine injured soldiers were immediately shifted to the 92 Base Hospital at Srinagar. But two of them succumbed on the way. The troops from 61 Rashtriya Rifles were moving in a convoy of 60 vehicles and were going home on leave. Traffic on the highway came to a halt and was diverted towards Pulwama. Searches were launched to nab the militants responsible for the attack. "We have some vital clues but the operation is on," Col. Batra said. The Army, he said, observed restraint to avoid damage to civilians. The Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba claimed responsibility for the ambush.
