CHENNAI: Students in Tamil Nadu showed how discerning they are, if one goes by the outcome of the single window admissions. The seats in established institutions or those with a good academic or placement record were the first to get filled, as counselling trends showed. Meenakshi Sunderarajan College of Engineering in Chennai on August 24 became the first self-financing college to fill all seats, including in the SC category. Started four years ago in the heart of the city, the college was ranked number 9 among 227 unaided technical institutions after the 2004 December semester examinations. Last year, the institution attracted nearly 20 recruiters. And this year, half a dozen companies have lined up to recruit 7th semester students. "Even on Friday, 35 of our students went for the State-wide placement, and four of them have got job offers, a proportion higher than many other institutions," says K.S. Babai, Dean and Principal. In all, 14 self-financing colleges filled all seats which they had surrendered to the single window pool IRTT, Erode; Prince Shri Venkateswara Padmavathy Engineering; Velammal Engineering; B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Engineering; Saveetha Engineering, Kancheepuram; SRR Engineering; Panimalar Engineering; Vel Tech; Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering; Hindustan College of Engineering, (all in and around Chennai); Meenakshi College of Engineering, Kancheepuram; Dr. Mahalingam Engineering and Coimbatore Institute of Engineering and Information Technology, both in Coimbatore.
Surprise candidate
It was SRR Engineering college which surprised everyone, says Salem-based analyst, Jayaprakash Gandhi. "In the last semester examination, the college was placed 208 out of 227, but this time when people came to know that it came under the Jeppiaar Educational Trust, all seats got filled." For the record: 39 colleges finished counselling with less than five vacant seats. These include Kongu Engineering, Erode; Kumaraguru College of Technology, Coimbatore; Jeppiaar Engineering College, Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore; and SSN College of Engineering, Chennai; Sona College of Technology, which were all in the top 20 in academic achievement.
