THRISSUR: A total of 6,118 candidates will contest the local body elections in the district, according to an official press release here on Saturday. As many as 10,740 candidates had filed their nomination papers. Of them, 4,622 withdrew their nominations. In all, 180, 527, 97, 621 and 4,693 candidates will contest the elections to the 52 wards of the Corporation, 170 wards of municipalities, 30 divisions of district panchayat, 209 wards of block panchayats and 1,481 wards of grama panchayats respectively. Among the six municipalities, Kunnamkulam has charted the highest number of candidates (119) and Guruvayur the lowest (49). Kunnamkulam and Guruvayur have 34 and 22 wards respectively. In all, 108, 103, 82 and 66 candidates are in the fray in Chalakudy, Kodungallur, Irinjalakuda and Chavakad respectively. Among the block panchayats, Irinjalakuda has registered the highest number of candidates (49) and Chovannur the lowest (30). The following are the numbers of candidates from other block panchayats: 34 (Chavakkad), 42 (Vadakkanchery), 35 (Pazhayannur), 32 (Ollukkara), 34 (Puzhakkal), 34 (Mullasery), 36 (Thalikkulam), 34 (Anthicaud), 33 (Cherpu), 47 (Kodakara), 32 (Vellankallur), 37 (Mathilakam), 34 (Mala), 42 (Chalakudy) and 36 (Kodungallur). Vadakkanchery has the highest number of wards (15) and Kodakara the lowest (14). Among the grama panchayats, Varantharapally has recorded the highest number of candidates (79), and Desamangalam and Orumanayur the lowest (31 each). Mattathur, Eriyad, Alur, Panachery and Puthur grama panchayats have 22 wards each, whereas Thycaud, Chovvannur, Porkkulam, Athirapally, Tholur and Poomangalam grama panchayats have 12 wards each. The following are the numbers of candidates who withdrew their nominations -- 121 (Corporation), 327 (municipalities), 471 (block panchayats), 3,655 (grama panchayats) and 48 (district panchayat). Symbols had been allotted to political parties, the release added.
