Water level

MADURAI: The level in the Periyar dam on Saturday stood at 129.40 feet with an inflow of 2,729 cusecs and a discharge of 1,599 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 55.45 feet with an inflow of 1,344 cusecs and a discharge of 1,800 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 6,815 mcft. Periyar dam recorded 18 mm of rainfall followed by Tekkadi 16 and Gudalur 2.

Exams postponed

The common quarterly examinationsscheduled for September 15 for Plus One and Plus Two students has been postponed to September 24 in view of Onam festival.

However, the examinations scheduled for other dates, between September 14 and 23, will he held without any change, according to N. Ammaiyappan, Higher Secondary Common Examination Convenor. Students of 200 higher secondary schools, including matriculation schools in Madurai revenue district, will sit for the examinations.

Training programme inaugurated

A two-day `continuous medical education programme for paramedical ophthalmic assistants' was inaugurated at the Lions Aravind Institute of Community Ophthalmology here on Saturday by Collector D. Raajendiran.

Nearly 90 participants from Madurai, Theni, Sivaganga, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Karur and Pudukottai districts are participating in the programme. Role of paramedical ophthalmic assistants in comprehensive eye care, recent advances in cataract surgery, diabetic retinopathy, refraction services, lasik laser and corneal blindness are among the topics to be covered.

G. Venkatasamy, Chairman, Aravind Eye Hospitals, presided.

Fuel price hike flayed

The Tamil Nadu Janata Dal has condemned the hike in the prices of petrol and diesel.

In a statement here on Tuesday, the general secretary of the party, K. John Moses, said the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre, which had increased the prices on five occasions since it came to power, had failed to keep up its poll promises.

Due to the recurring hike in prices, the people have been worst affected and what was disheartening was that the Centre all along cited the escalating international prices as the reason for the hike.

He urged the Central and State Governments to initiate immediate measures and reduce the oil prices by lessening the tax on petrol and diesel.
