dated September 12, 1955: Poet Bharati's ideals

Sri Kunrakudi Adigal said in Madras on September 11 that poet Subramania Bharati was more than a national poet and belonged to the order of Nayanmars and Alwars. Inaugurating a two-day Bharati festival organised under the auspices of the Bharatiyar Sangham at the Vani Mahal, Thyagarayanagar, he stressed the need to honour poets and litterateurs and said the greatest wealth of a country was its literary heritage. He said Bharati was described as a national and revolutionary poet in the sense that his works had awakened the masses and roused their patriotic instincts. Nationalism did not mean patriotism only but included the culture, tradition and civilisation of a country. He would, therefore, say that Bharati was more than a national poet. One could find Tamil culture and civilisation reflected in his works. Earlier, after prayer by Pithukuli Murugadas, Mr. M.P. Somasundaram, Editor, Kalki, welcomed the gathering and explained the significance of the function.
