THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has said that anti-CPI(M) forces are raking up the Rajan case now not because of their opposition to Emergency, but on account of the stand being taken by the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) in the panchayat-municipal elections. "Rajan case, relating to the custodial death of REC student Rajan, was one of the horrifying episodes of Emergency. Nobody forgets the rulers and pro-Emergency elements' responsibility for the same. The case is being raked up now not because of opposition to Emergency, but because of the stand being taken by the party led by K. Karunakaran against the UDF-BJP combine. Congress-BJP leaders must remember that the people of Kerala have commonsense to realise this," Mr. Vijayan said in a statement here on Sunday. He asked the Congress to clarify why it had not so far repudiate Emergency enforced by Indira Gandhi, and pointed out that UDF and BJP were behaving like twins to take on the CPI(M) over Emergency. Before raising allegations against the CPI(M), BJP leaders must explain why they have forged alliance with the Congress, the party of Emergency, from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram, he said. Mr. Vijayan pointed out that the Sonia Gandhi-led Congress had so far not shown the willingness to openly disown Emergency. The CPI(M) had all along protested strongly against Emergency and it had no reason to white-wash the Governments responsible for the Emergency excesses. Several CPI(M) workers, including himself, had been beaten up and jailed for their opposition to Emergency. It was ridiculous for persons like M. M. Hassan, who were in the forefront in enforcing Emergency, to begin raising questions to those who had suffered the heavy impact of Emergency misrule, the CPI(M) leader said. Mr. Vijayan said the CPI(M) gave issue-based support to the Congress only because it wanted to keep the Hindu fascist BJP out of power.
