THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The weather gods relented but the slushy track at the Vellayani Agriculture college ground did not encourage all out performances from the athletes as only two records were set on the opening day of the South Zone junior athletic championship on Sunday. While the competition failed to rise above the levels of mediocrity in the track events, the saving grace came from the records set on the field events. A. Anitcham of Tamil Nadu, with a performance which nowhere near her career best, managed to improve the existing record in discus in girls' under-18 catetory. The 12th standard student in her third attempt hurled discus to 36.28m to better Susan D'Suza's old mark (35.89) set in 2004. Prasobh S. Narayan turned out to be an unlikely hero for the host as he set a new record in under-18 boys' javelin. The plus two student of NSS High School Ramangiri broke the four-year-old record set by P.J. Purandharan (56.63) in 2001. At the end of the first day, host Kerala had sneaked a 10 points lead over Tamil Nadu.
