Public school to be opened

MYSORE: The former MP Srikantadutta Narasimharaja Wadiyar has announced the launch of an elite public school here, which will function from the academic year 2005-06. It will come up on 15 acres of land near the Chamundi Vihar Stadium, he told presspersons on Saturday. Educationists, including the former Vice-Chancellor of the Karnataka State Open University Rame Gowda, are involved in the school project. The admission process will commence in March and teachers will be recruited in January. — Special Correspondent

Private Dasara celebrations

MYSORE: In the run up to the private Dasara celebrations, the assembling of the Golden Throne has been scheduled for September 19 and the traditional ceremonies will commence on October 4, the former MP Srikantadutta Narasimharaja Wadiyar has said. However, there have been some changes in the calendar of events and the private Vijayadashmi celebrations of the royal family will be held on October 12, Mr. Wadiyar told presspersons on Saturday. The official website of the royal family, www.royalsplendourof-mysore.com, will have images and photographs of the earlier era and the private celebrations will be recorded and arrangements will be made for "webcasting." — Special Correspondent

Campaign against cell phones in colleges

DHARWAD: K Balaveera Reddy, Vice-Chancellor of the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), on Saturday took his campaign against the use of mobile phones in colleges to the campus of the SDM College of Engineering and Technology here. He was here to inaugurate a workshop on education. The Vice-Chancellor seized 52 mobile phones from students and staff members, according to information received here. — Special Correspondent

Deve Gowda for Udupi

Udupi: The former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda will visit Udupi district on Tuesday. A press release issued by President of the district unit of the Janata Dal (Secular) Deviprasad Shetty here on Sunday said Mr. Deve Gowda will address party workers at 10 a.m. at Kaup. The former Prime Minister will hold talks with farmers on rejuvenation of the Brahmavar Sugar Factory at Brahamvar at 2.30 p.m. and a consultation meeting with party workers later. — Staff Correspondent

JD(S) executive panel meeting planned

BANGALORE: A crucial meeting of the State Executive Committee of the Janata Dal (Secular) has been convened for September 22 and it is likely to decide on the action to be taken on the former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and other leaders who continue to attack the party President H.D. Deve Gowda and the State Working President H.D. Kumaraswamy. The meeting is being held eight days ahead of a party convention to be organised by Mr. Siddaramaiah here on September 30. He has invited Mr. Deve Gowda to it. Party General Secretary Y.S.V. Datta said the September 22 meeting will be presided over by the State party chief N. Thippanna and attended by Mr. Deve Gowda. — Special Correspondent

Entries invited for art award

GULBARGA: The Indian Royal Academy of Art and Culture has invited entries from the artistes throughout India working in the field of paintings, drawing, graphic, sculpture and photography for its third annual Indian Royal Academy Awards for 2005-06. CPI(M) begins campaign

GULBARGA: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) State unit on Sunday began its campaign against the "anti-people economic policies" of the Centre by taking out "jeep jathas" throughout the State. Party State secretariat member Maruti Manpade told presspersons here on Sunday that different jathas will be taken out in different parts of the State to create awareness among people about the dangers of the economic policies pursued by the Centre. He said the jJeep jathas would be taken from Bidar to Koppal, Bijapur to Dharwad, Gadag to Sullia, Kodugu and Bijapur to Haveri. — Special Correspondent

News portal launch today

Bidar: "Karnataka News Net", a web based news portal in Kannada and English, will launch operations in Bidar on Monday. Minister for Forests Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli, will inaugurate the office building, Editor of the portal Dinoo Sacham told presspersons on Sunday. Minister for Animal Husbandry and Wakfs Mirajuddin Patel will inaugurate the videoconference facility. Using this to communicate will be cheaper than telephones, he said. An on line market network will give prices of commodities across wholesale and retail markets. This will help farmers sell their produce in the market, which fetches them the best prices. Apart from this, the portal is also launching web-based games. — Staff Correspondent

Health awareness

BELLARY: Family Health Awareness Campaign-2005 will be held in 73 health centres, including urban health centres, in the district from September 12 to September 24. The programme is aimed at creating awareness about Reproductive Tract Infections and Sexually Transmitted Infections in those in the reproductive age group of 15 to 49. The awareness programme will be held for three days. — Staff Correspondent

15 arrested

Raichur: The Raichur police on Sunday arrested 15 persons on the charge of gambling and recovered Rs. 6,365 stake money from them in Sirwar town. The arrested persons have been remanded in judicial custody. The Sirwar Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Student found dead

Bidar: The body of a 20-year-old student was found under the Kadwad Bridge in Bidar taluk on Friday. The police, who gave the name of the student as Sunil Kumar Premrao Bhende, said he was studying Diploma in Education in the Siddharoodha College of Education in Bidar, had committed suicide. An empty pesticide bottle and a photograph of a girl were found in his pockets, the police said.— Staff Correspondent

Three killed in road accident

GADAG: Three persons were killed and four were injured in a collision between two lorries on the outskirts of Gadag in the early hours of Saturday.

Two persons died on spot and while one died of injuries at the KIMS hospital, Hubli. The dead have been identified as Mallesh Siddappa Nelleri (40) from Adargunchi village of Hubli, Laxman Basavantappa Mali of Manguli village of Bijapur district and Ramesh Topanna Bhadrapur (40) from Gadag. — Special Correspondent

Caution

BELLARY: Pankaj Kumar Thakur, Superintendent of Police, has warned that action will be taken against those who indulged in pasting obscene posters, especially of women, in public places, under Section 149 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and Section 5 of the Karnataka Police Act. The warning comes in the wake of protests staged by the district unit of All India Mahila Samskrutika Sanghatane (AIMSS), which had submitted memorandum to the authorities concerned to prevent pasting of obscene posters in public places in the city. — Staff Correspondent
