PONDICHERRY: : Pondicherry Lt. Governor M. M. Lakhera has urged the ex-servicemen to get their grievances redressed without taking the issue to the open. Addressing a meeting organised by the Pondicherry Ex-Services League (an outfit of ex-servicemen) on the concluding day of the Ex-Servicemen Week here on Sunday, Mr. Lakhera said that the League, to which the Pondicherry unit was affiliated, was oldest welfare organisation in the country and a recognised one. The members should draw maximum benefit through mutual understanding and concern for common welfare.
Self-employment
Making a general observation that there should be lesser dependence on government jobs, he said that the Union Territory administration would soon come out with a number of welfare measures for them and that self-employment projects would be encouraged. A coaching centre would be started for youth aspiring to join the armed forces. Stating that it was a good that Pondicherry should have a special economic zone, he said focus should be on getting the manpower ready through training r so that once the projects went on stream there would be scope for jobs here. The Centre was aware of the need to address the grievances of the ex-servicemen. The issue of one-man - one-pension would be settled and the Sainik Welfare Department would also come out with welfare measures for them and their dependents. Mr. Lakhera distributed assistance under various schemes, greeted war veterans and also the dependents of the ex-servicemen on the occasion. He also released the League's souvenir. A. M. Krishnamoorthy, MLA, who presided, referred to the sacrifices made by the Defence forces. Director of the Pondicherry Sainik Welfare Department Col. (retd.) A. B. Rajan, Major Generals (retd.) A. P. Singh, R. S. Kannan, B. Banerjee and K. K. Tewari and Lt. General (retd.) A. K. Chatterjee were among those who participated in the programme. The League president S.Murugesan welcomed the gathering.
