THANJAVUR: : Rayanmundanpatti in Thanjavur district has become the first village to boast of an electronic connectivity (videoconferencing) with Rashtrapathi Bhavan in New Delhi and the Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women. This was made possible by the Providing Urban Amenities to Rural Areas (PURA), a scheme launched by President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, in the college on December 20, 2003. Project director and college principal N. Ramachandran interacted with village panchayat president V. Kannan and self-help group members as well as some children on Friday. The Deans, the Directors and lecturers of the college spoke to the villagers through videoconferencing and urged them to build a knowledge-based society. V. Ponraj, Director, Technology Inter-phase, Rashtrapathi Bhavan, conveyed his greetings to the villagers. College chairman K. Veeramani greeted the people. A SHG member will look after the village resource centre. Seven villages will be connected in a week under the scheme. The scheme will benefit 65 villages.
