BJP demands probe

PATHANAMTHITTA: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State president P.S. Sreedharan Pillai has demanded a CBI inquiry into the burning of a transport bus owned by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation at Kalamasserry in Ernakulam district on Friday night.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, Mr. Sreedharan Pillai alleged that the incident was an offshoot of the communal appeasement policy followed by the ruling United Democratic Front and the Opposition, Left Democratic Front. — Staff Reporter

DTPC Onam fete at Adoor

PATHANAMTHITTA: The district-level Onam celebrations sponsored by the District Tourism Promotion Council will be held at Adoor on September 13 and 14. Water Resources Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan will inaugurate the celebrations on September 13. Food and Civil Supplies Minister Adoor Prakash will be the chief guest at the valedictory function on September 14. `Mantrikom-II,' a show by Magician Samraj, and a ganamela by Cochin Kalabhavan will be the highlights of the celebrations. — Staff Reporter

Congress leaders to begin election campaign

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will begin a 10-day panchayat-municipal election campaign tour from Tuesday. He will kick off his campaign in Thiruvananthapuram and tour Kollam, Kozhikode, Idukki, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kasaragod, Kannur, Malappuram and Palakkad, in that order, during the following days. The former Chief Minister A.K. Antony will begin his campaign in Kottayam on Saturday, and attend meetings in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Ernakulam, Cherthala, Kozhikode and Thrissur during the subsequent six days. Kerala Pradesh Congress Comittee president Ramesh Chennithala will begin his campaign on Saturday and cover Thiruvananthapruam, Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Malappuram, Ernakulam, Wayanad, Kozhikode and Kannur, in that order, during the subsequent eight days. — Special Correspondent

Hike in poll duty allowance sought

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Government Employees' Union has sought an increase in the allowance being paid to the State staff doing election duty. The union has submitted a memorandum to the State Election Commission seeking the hike, its general secretary, Sooranad Chandrasekharan, says. — Special Correspondent

Two boys feared drowned

PALAKKAD: Sherif and Naushad, both aged 16, are feared drowned in the Bharatapuzha. The boys, from an orphanage at Vadanappilli in Thrissur, had gone to take bath in the swollen river at Jnagattiri in Thrithala, along with 12 other youth, on Sunday. They had come to Thrithala to attend a marriage on Sunday morning. Attempts by the Fire and Rescue Services from Palakkad to trace them did not succeed because of the heavy current in the river following the opening of the shutters of overflowing dams. — Staff Reporter

Murder case against constables

PALAKKAD: The Agali Police has filed a first information report on Sunday, charging a murder case, under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, against Sunil Kumar and Prabhakaran, constables of the station. They allegedly beat to death Raveendran Nair, 46, of Chinnaparampu at Kalkandi, near Mukkali, in a drunken brawl. The victim and the accused, along with Suresh Tharakan of Agali, reportedly got drunk and quarrelled on Friday night. Raveendran Nair died in a hospital at Perinthalmanna on Saturday on Sunday. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Agali, V. Chandran, said the accused were absconding. — Staff Reporter

Minister's car meets with accident

KOLLAM: The official car of Labour Minister Babu Divakaran met with a minor accident at Ayathil here on Sunday morning. The Minister was travelling in the car when the accident occurred. The car and a van collided with each other. No one was injured. — Staff Reporter

KPCC joint secretaries

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Congress president Sonia Gandhi has nominated 16 party workers as joint secretaries of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala said here on Sunday. The new joint secretaries and the districts they hail from are T.N. Pratapan, MLA (Thrissur), Alphonsa John (Kollam), Satheesan Pacheni (Kannur), V.V. Prakash (Malappuram), B. Babu Prasad (Alappuzha), Mannar Abdul Latheef (Alappuzha), P.T. Ajay Mohan (Malappuram), N. Subramanian (Kozhikode), P.K. Gopi (Kottayam), P.J. Poulose (Palakkad), Abdul Gafoor (Alappuzha), Solomon Alex (Thiruvananthapuram), T.P. Hassan (Ernakulam), Lathika Subhash (Kottayam), K.P. Flood situation continues to be grim

ALAPPUZHA: The flood situation in Kuttanad taluk continued to be grim on Sunday. A large part of the taluk is still submerged in water. Though the authorities have wound up the 177 flood relief camps that functioned in Kuttanad, free food is still being provided from the camp centres. Vehicular traffic on the Alappuzha-Changanassery road has not fully resumed. Power supply in many parts of Kuttanad continues to be disrupted. — Staff Reporter

Body for palliative care

Thrissur: The Thrissur Initiative in Palliative Care (TIP), an organisation to coordinate palliative care activities in the district, was launched on Sunday. The organisation plans to bring together professionals and voluntary agencies working in the field of palliative care, and hold training programmes, a press release said. — Staff Reporter

Essay competition

PALAKKAD: Indian Institute of Scientific Heritage has invited essays for district-level competition on `Heritage values and national integration.' The competition is for those from Palakkad district only. The winners will be given prize at the `Paithrika Samithy-2005' seminar to be held at the Town Hall on October 22. Entries should be sent to C.K. Haridas, chairman, Palakkad Chapter of Indian Institute of Scientific Heritage, Anjali Gardens, Palakkad-6, before October 7. — Staff Reporter

Onam fair extended

Kozhikode: The Kerala Khadi Village Industries Board has extended its Onam fair at the Kozhikode Corporation stadium complex till September 14. It is offering a discount up to 30 per cent. Fairs are also being conducted at Vadakara, Mepayyur, Ramanattukara, Perambra, Payoli, Ullyeri, Koilandy, Balussery, Kuttiyadi, Mukkom and Naduvannur. — Staff Reporter
