After Plachimada, it is Gangaikondan

Special Correspondent

Activists from Tamil Nadu seek support

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The more than 1,000-day-old struggle by the people of Plachimada appears to be just the beginning of a long story. Encouraged by it, people of Gangaikondan in Tirunelveli district are gearing up for a struggle to prevent exploitation of the Tamiraparani river.

Vignettes of the struggle, which would hit a major landmark with a people's march on Monday, were on display in different parts of the capital in the form of an exhibition of drawings and posters during the last few days.

The struggle is against the proposal to set up a bottling plant of Coca-Cola in Gangaikondan with, according to the People's Art and Literary Association spearheading the struggle, the licence to extract five lakh litres of water from the Tamiraparani everyday.

Said Sathya, leading the team of activists from Tamil Nadu, "We are here to seek your support for struggle and learn from your experience." The Coke plant, she said, would prove a bane for both Kerala and Tamil Nadu. "You would be denied of vegetables and we of both rice and vegetables."

The team held discussions with activist groups and organised exhibitions on college campuses and near the State Assembly and Secretariat premises.

The touring exhibition concluded with a final display near Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple on Sunday evening.
