KOLLAM: Train no. 2624 Trivandrum-Chennai Super-fast Express was stopped near Karunagapally at 4.10 p.m. on Sunday as the gates at the Chittumoola level-crossing were open. The train resumed the journey after 10 minutes following the closure of the gates. The gatekeeper informed the railway authorities that he did not close the gate since he was not directed by the Karungapally railway station personnel to do so. The Karunagapally stationmaster told The Hindu that the telephone line between the level-crossing and the station had developed a fault, and hence, it was not possible to contact the gatekeeper. There was no need for apprehension since the signals on either side of the level- crossing became green only when the gates were closed. Moreover, the wireless communication system came in handy to inform the driver and the guard of the train that the gates were not closed. The train came to a halt ahead of the signal, he added.
