Row over lotus symbol on water-tankers

CHHINDWARA: Close on the heels of the controversy over the lotus — the Bharatiya Janata Party election symbol — being published in standard VI textbooks in Madhya Pradesh, a row has surfaced over its alleged depiction on a tanker used for supplying water to parched areas of Chhindwara district.

Objecting to this act allegedly done by Ikalbihari village sarpanch Ravi Bhau, deputy sarpanch Gulab Choudhary has threatened to complain to the Election Commission.

"Though the tanker has been provided by the State Government, painting the BJP's election symbol on it is inappropriate," Mr. Choudhary told reporters on Sunday.

Reacting to the allegations, Mr. Chandraban Singh, who is also Minister in-charge of the district, said that around 11 tankers had been provided in the district from the MLA's fund.

"The tankers should carry messages that they were purchased under the MLA fund," he said, adding it was not proper to paint the lotus on the tankers and these should be removed immediately.
