CHENNAI: The All-India Medical and Engineering Colleges Association has urged the State Government to allow self-financing engineering colleges to fill seats by admitting students who have cleared the higher secondary examination. T.D. Naidu, president, told presspersons here on Sunday that the association had taken up the matter with the State Government. "So far, there is no response from the Government." Pointing out that there were about 11,000 seats lying unfilled in the engineering colleges, he said it was less this time compared to last year, due to "cordial relationship" between the colleges and Anna University. As it was not possible to conduct one more entrance examination, the colleges should be allowed to fill the seats with students who had cleared the higher secondary examination. He said the Madhya Pradesh Government had given such permission to the self-financing colleges. "We have approached the Governments of Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Jammu and Kashmir in this regard," he said. Mr. Naidu welcomed the dress code and ban on the use of mobile phones in engineering colleges. He said wearing jeans and T-shirts should not be allowed. Otherwise, there should be no stipulation. Mr. Naidu said he had been invited to a meeting called by a group of Members of Parliament in Hyderabad on September 26 to discuss the proposed legislation to overrule the recent Supreme Court order abolishing quota in self-financing colleges.
