ERODE: The Correspondent of Kongu Arivalayam School for Mentally Challenged children R. Rajendran, in a press release, said on Sunday that he had received information that two women wearing the Kongu Arivalayam badges were collecting donations in Erode and other areas for the Kongu Arivalayam school for mentally challenged children. Three arrested

ERODE: The Chennimalai police arrested three persons on Saturday night when they were engaged in exhibiting an obscene film on cable TV. According to the Superintendent of Police, P. Nagarajan he had received a phone call from a woman, stating that an obscene film was being exhibited on Cable TV by the operator at Chennimalai Melapalayam area. He immediately deputed some Special Branch CID police personnel who caught him red-handed and arrested a cable TV operator, Thangavel at Melapalayam when he was telecasting the obscene film along with his assistants, Murugesan and Sathish. - Staff Reporter

Symposium on Bharati's writings

CHENNAI: A group of scholars is planning to celebrate the 123rd birth anniversary of Subramania Bharati on December 11 by organising a symposium on the poet-thinker's writings. S. Vijaya Bharati, granddaughter of Bharatiyar is co-ordinating the efforts and will receive entries for the symposium, to be published as a book, at 35/2 (15) 3rd Main Road, Gandhi Nagar, Adyar, Chennai 600 020. Air traffic controllers oppose AAI's decision

CHENNAI: The Air Traffic Controllers' Guild (India) has expressed concern over the Airports Authority of India's decision to provide a 24-hour area control centre at the Mangalore airport ``without taking preparatory measures.'' R.K. Singh, general secretary, said the move was inadvisable in the interest of safety. It would result in a controller providing services in a radar environment during a particular hour and then switching to non-radar environment for the next hour. — Special Correspondent

Fake currency: case against two

RAICHUR: The Raichur police have registered a case against P.C. Ramaswamy and P. Tiruvengadam of Dharmapuri after counterfeit currency notes were found in the cash they had given to Venkatreddy of Haravi Basavanna Camp of Manvi taluk in the district.

The police said the duo on Wednesday had handed over Rs. 1.50 lakhs to Mr. Venkatareddy after purchasing a tractor from him. When Mr. Venkatareddy deposited the cash in the Neermanvi branch of the Tungabhadra Gramin Bank, it was noticed that the cash deposited by him contained six counterfeit notes in the denomination of Rs. 500. — Staff Correspondent

Hoax call

SALEM: An anonymous telephone call that threatened to torch buses parked in New Integrated Bus Stand here on Sunday turned out to be a hoax. According to the police, a timekeeper at the State Express Transport Corporation office, received a call around 9.30 a.m. The caller said to be calling from Kerala warned that "they would burn buses in Salem as they torched the State Transport Corporation Bus, near Kochi on Friday." The timekeeper informed the officials, who in turn alerted the police. A team with the bomb squad searched the bus stand. Police said they had initiated efforts to trace the caller. Staff Reporter

Talent search programme

Tuticorin: A talent search programme jointly conducted by State Bank of India and Sakthi Vinayakar Hindu Vidhyalaya was held here on Sunday.

Sources said 1,584 students from various schools across the district wrote the talent search exams (both Tamil and English) held under three categories, which were divided according to the classes the candidates were studying.

The questionnaire covered various topics and the paper was set in an objective format, sources added.

The results of the examination would be announced on September 18.

The State Bank of India sources said that top two finishers in the Category C, meant for students in Std X-XII, would be given educational loan by the bank to pursue undergraduate studies.

Tribute paid to Immanuel Sekaran

Paramakudi: Hundreds of Dalit people on Sunday thronged the memorial of the late Dalit leader Immanuel Sekaran at Paramakudi.

They paid homage to the late leader on the occasion of his 48th death anniversary. The Vandavasi MLA, Murugavelrajan, the Puthiya Tamizhagam president, K. Krishnasamy, Puthiya Tamizhagam's break away group leader, Duraiarasan, were among those who paid homage at the memorial amidst tight security.

The traffic on the busy Madurai-Rameswaram national highway was disrupted for more than five hours as the police blocked vehicles on account of security arrangements.

Though some vehicles were diverted through Kamudhi and Parthibanur route, vehicles could not move, as the single narrow road could not handle hundreds of vehicles.

Grievance day meet

THENI: A grievance day meeting for TNEB consumers will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the office of the Additional Chief Engineer, Theni, according to a release from TNEB, Theni division. Those interested may take part in the meeting and get their grievances redressed.

Water level

MADURAI: The level at Periyar Dam on Sunday stood at 130 feet with an inflow of 2915 cusecs and a discharge of 1521 cusecs.

The Vaigai Dam level was at 55.22 feet with an inflow of 1414 cusecs and a discharge of 1800 cusecs. The combined Periyar Credit stood at 6907 mcft.

The amount of rainfall recorded in the following places (in mm) was: Periyar 42, Tekkadi 23, Gudalur 3, Shanmuganadhi 10, Uttamapalayam 7, Veerapandi 2, Vaigai Dam 1, Manjalar 14, Marudhanadhi 40 and Sothuparai 15. — Staff Reporter
