`Kalki' awards presented
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI:
Kalki Krishnamoorthy Memorial Awards were distributed to young artists at the Bharatiya Vidyabhavan Auditorium here on Friday on the occasion of the 106th birth anniversary of Kalki Krishnamoorthy, nationalist writer and novelist.
City Police Commissioner R. Nataraj handed over the awards to `Sikkil' Gurucharan, singer, and S. Varadarajan, violinist, at the function organised by the Kalki Memorial Trust.
V. Gopalan, nephew of Kalki, said the 16 previous awardees had made a name for themselves.
Mr. Nataraj paid homage to the legacy of Kalki, calling him an avatar of modern literature. ``The Mamallapuram sculptures remind one of `Sivagamiyin Sabatham.' There is a short story `Oru Kaithiyin Prarthanai' that talks of a vehicle breaking speed limits,'' he said, pointing to his continuing relevance.
Kalki helped to spread the reading habit among housewives and gave the world a model of how to write historical novels in Tamil.
The awards ceremony was followed with a performance by Gurucharan, accompanied by Varadarajan on the violin, V. Rajarao on the mridangam and S.V.Ramani on the ghatam.
