BELLARY: The Slum Jana-Jagruti Andolan Samiti, Bellary, has appealed to slum dwellers to reject the possession certificates/pattas given to them on the ground that it is only a political gimmick. Distribution of these certificates through the local MLAs/Minister was only to hoodwink the gullible, especially those living in the slums, Suryakant Afzalpur and Allagiriraj, members of the Samiti, told presspersons here on Sunday. Slum dwellers should not fall prey to such an act as a mere possession certificate/patta will not enable the holder to register property, they said. They pointed out that a Government Order issued on October 18, 2004 had said that the Karnataka Slum Clearance Board could not issue any such certificate neither under the Revenue Act or those of the Slum Act or Regularisation of Unauthorised Constructions Rules. Yet, these certificates were being distributed among the slum dwellers, they said.
