Police to act tough with organisers of rasta rokos

Staff Reporter

NALGONDA: The district police have taken serious note of the increasing number of cases of rasta rokos (blocking of roads) by protesters in the district.

Observing that a group of people squatted on the national highway no.9 at Kethepally demanding that the officials give de-worming medicine for sheep in their village, the police department on Sunday warned of initiating action against such protesters hereafter.

Inconvenience

The Superintendent of Police, M.M. Bhagwat, maintained that great inconvenience was caused to commuters because of the increasing number of rastarokos in the district, according to a press release issued on Sunday. "Stopping buses and squatting on roads has become a regular feature in the district. The protesters must understand that the act would create problems to patients, pregnant women and other travellers,'' the release added.

He suggested to the protesters to meet the Government officials, who are extensively touring villages, to find a solution to their grievances.

"If you are not satisfied with their actions, you can always meet the divisional level officials and later approach the district level officers,'' Mr. Bhagwat said.

Recalling that 27 protesters who had staged a rasta roko under the Neredcharla Police Station limits, were punished by law, the SP said that people who block roads would be booked under sections 341 and 143 of the Indian Penal Code.
