Grievance cell meetings put off

KADAPA: District Grievance Cell meeting will not be held at the Collectorate on Monday's until completion of the municipal election process, Collector G. Asok Kumar said on Sunday.

The next grievance cell meeting would be held on October 3 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., he said in a statement. - Staff Reporter

Students urged to take up sports

KADAPA: Students should not be confined to proving their mettle in studies, but also concentrate on sports that would ensure their physical fitness and mental acumen, Collector G. Asok Kumar said on Sunday.

MP's call to fight globalisation

Nellore: Bhadrachalam M.P, M. Babu Rao, has called upon the working class to oppose the evil effects of so-called globalisation, which he alleged was against the legitimate rights of working class.

Addressing the 4th zonal conference of All-India Peerless Employees'Union here on Sunday, he asserted that the working classes were not against foreign investment, but were only opposing its deployment on key sectors of defence and other service sectors. - Staff Reporter

KURNOOL: Colourful processions marked immersion of Ganesh idols in Nandyal and Adoni towns on Sunday.

Four BJP activists suspended

HYDERABAD: Three activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party of Chilakaluripet in Guntur district have been suspended by the State unit president, N. Indrasena Reddy, for violating party discipline. They are Cherukuri Kotaiah Choudhury, M.A.Salam and Bathula Sagnana Rao, a press release issued by the State general secretary, K. Laxman, said on Sunday. Mr. Reddy also suspended Kyadasu Nagayya, party's Jagtiyal mandal president, for contesting against the official candidate in the tenth ward. - Special Correspondent

Congress panels for municipal elections

HYDERABAD: The APCC has set up a control room at Gandhi Bhavan, led by the APSIDC chairman, S. Indrasain Reddy, as chairman and T. Seshnarayan as convener for the ensuing municipal elections.

The PCC has also constituted four other panels for better coordination during the elections. G. Adiseshagiri Rao heads the publicity committee, while Dharmavarapu Subramanyam leads the cultural committee. P. Purshottam Reddy, an advocate, heads the legal committee and K. Laxma Reddy as convener of the media committee. - Special Correspondent

Constable dies as rifle goes off

KARIMNAGAR: In a freak mishap, an APSP constable was killed when his SLR rifle went off accidentally while he was cleaning it at Manthani Mutharam police station on Sunday.

Reports reaching here said that the APSP fourth battalion `F' company constable, M. Sampath Reddy (25), was a native of Bheemadevarapalli mandal. - Staff Reporter

Heart surgeries

KADAPA: Three hundred and fifty congenital heart patients of Kadapa district were operated upon in Apollo Hospitals, out of 2,300 such surgeries performed all over the State, Collector G. Asok Kumar said on Sunday.

The Government spent Rs. 2.90 crores towards surgeries of congenital cardiac patients, he said at a medical camp at Kadapa Government hospital for children who underwent operations. - Staff Reporter

Aid to weavers

Rajahmundry : One hundred and fifty six weaver families, which are in dire straits, got a relief on Sunday when they received rice and cash from a philanthropist who read about them in these columns. The Hindu highlighted the plight of Bandarulanka weaving community on August 31.

Reacting to the plight of weavers, P. Malleswara Rao, retired Professor of Hyderabad, has sent 1,500 kg of rice and cash for distribution among weavers. - Staff Reporter

Two youths drowned

Rajahmundry: Two youths were drowned in the Godavari on Sunday night near while they were immersing Ganesh idol.

According to the police, Namburi Mandikanta (18), Jakka Santhosh (18) and Mehar (19) were drowned while they were immersing the idol. Mehar, who knows swimming, managed to reach the riverbank but other two were drowned. Fishermen were pressed into service to trace the bodies. - Staff Reporter

Colonies inundated

NIZAMABAD: Half a dozen residential colonies were inundated rendering about 600 weaker sections families homeless with the Raghunatha Cheruvu (tank) located on the outskirts of the district headquarters town breaching on Sunday.

Water entered houses and Shantinagar, Canalkatta, Amannagar, Muzahidnagar, Koja Colony and Malapally are waterlogged. - Staff Reporter
