Jail term for rash driving

Lorry driver sentenced by magistrate for causing fatalities

CHENNAI: A trial magistrate in the George Town Court sentenced Suresh, a lorry driver, to two years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 8,500 in a case of rash and negligent driving that led to two road fatalities in May 2001.

A police release said that Suresh (27), who was driving a tanker truck TN 01 X 6139 at Muthusamy bridge, ran over a two-wheeler driver Michel Raj (44) and the pillion rider Ramu (18). The two died on the spot.

The Elephant Gate traffic investigation wing probed the case and filed a charge sheet against the driver. Trial magistrate Siva Shanmugam delivered the judgment on Friday.

Teenager in custody

A teenager landed in judicial custody after he was allegedly found to be involved in house break-ins in Tod Hunter Nagar, Saidapet. Investigators said a special team that was probing into two complaints of break-ins in Saidapet area over the last month apprehended a 16-year-old boy on Thursday at Vinayakapuram. It was found that he was earlier involved in cases of theft. The boy confessed that he and his accomplice, who lives in Rave quarters, north Chennai, broke into houses in the government staff quarters.

The police recovered three-wheelers, a computer and a piece of jewellery.

The boy was produced before an empowered magistrate, who ordered that he be remanded to custody.

A police release said the boy had escaped from special homes twice. The police are on the lookout for his accomplice.
