Telangana armed struggle: Left irked by BJP `hijack'

Special Correspondent

It is Communists' right to celebrate the event, says Raghavulu

HYDERABAD: The Left parties have reacted strongly to the "hijacking" of the Telangana armed struggle by the BJP and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and said they had no claim to its celebration whatsoever.

At a combined meeting organised by the Communists to observe the 57th anniversary of the struggle here on Sunday, the CPI (M) Polit Bureau member and State secretary, B.V. Raghavulu, said it was their legacy to celebrate the occasion.

The Sangh Parivar distorted history to project L.K. Advani as the icon of modern India to lay claim to the celebration. The BJP tried to take credit by bestowing upon Mr. Advani the title of "Iron Man", which was vested with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, then Union Home Minister, who rushed Army to Hyderabad to merge it with the Indian Union.

What to celebrate

The question was whether to celebrate the liberation of Hyderabad from Nizam's rule or its merger with the Union.

Perhaps, the latter was significant because it brought with it communal harmony in the region. But, the BJP wanted to vitiate the atmosphere, Mr. Raghavulu said.

The CPI MP of Nalgonda, S. Sudhakar Reddy, said the armed struggle, led by the Communists, laid the foundation for the "Police Action" in Hyderabad in 1948. The Communist leaders of that time, including Ravi Narayan Reddy, Baddam Yella Reddy, Maqdoom Mohiuddin waged struggles against the feudal and aristocratic policies of the Nizam.

The BJP, however, gave a communal colour to the movement, depicting it as a Hindus-Muslim confrontation.

TRS' turn

Mr. Reddy was also critical of the regional chauvinism promoted by TRS in the name of the struggle. He said Telangana was identified with Andhra in those days, as seen from the emergence of Andhra Maha Sabha, Andhra Sahitya Parishad and Srikrishna Devaraya Andhra Bhasha Nilayam to promote Telugu culture in the face of Urdu domination.

The CPI(ML) State secretary, B. Venkateswara Rao, said the present struggle for separate Telangana was a manifestation of feudal lords in TRS leaders, K. Chandrasekhar Rao and A. Narendra.
