Vignettes of Onam festivities

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Students, teachers and parents took a trip down the Malayalis' very own Onam memory lane at Asan Memorial School on Friday.

The impending harvest festival and the rituals associated with it were brought to life in the form of a dance-drama by students. Grandparents spoke on `onakkodi' (new clothes distributed by elderly members of the family), `pookkalam' (floral decoration) to welcome legendary king Mahabali and `onasadya' (feast).

The production also brought out the still-on compulsion of Malayalis to flock back home from all parts of the globe to be part of Onam festivities.

While non-resident cousins vied with each other to capture the State Government-sponsored festival, the presentation also had vignettes of folk art and classical dances such as `Mohiniyattam.'

The school also organised fancy dress and `pookkalam' competitions. It also brought back memories of having fun during Onam.
