CHENNAI: About 120 students of Standards I and II of St. John's Matriculation school, Virugambakkam, turned doctors for one day last week. They learnt and spread awareness on topics such as body physique, health and fitness, proper nutrition, food habits and personal care, hygiene. The aim of the camp was to imbibe in children awareness and make them practice personal health and hygiene besides safety and first aid.
Teaching methodology
The main attraction was the teaching methodology, according to camp organisers Aspire Superkidz. Children learned in groups and through activities, games and practical hands on experience. Methodologies and learning techniques such as brain-based cognitive learning, multiple intelligence, made the learning process fun, they noted. Children were shown various eatables and vegetables, and were asked to elaborate on their benefits and harmful effects. For example, a little one pointed at a picture of a tender coconut and described it as the best summer treat while another matched soft drinks with harmful food items. The children were given a stethoscope so that the `Little Doctor' for the day measured the heartbeat of their friends. Through Little Doctor, Superkidz sought to provide a platform for emotional, intellectual and social development of the child.
