TAMBARAM: Nearly 1,000 students of architecture from Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka are competing for top honours at zonal level competitions organised by the National Association of Students of Architecture (NASA), now on at the SRM Institute of Technology (Deemed University), Kattankulathur.

According to M. Thirumeni, Head of SRM School of Architecture, NASA was among the oldest student bodies and was unique as no other vocation had "such a well-organised and professionally managed organisation for students."

Three-day event

NASA organised annual competitions at each of its eight zones and the three-day event at the institute was for Zone. No. 6, he said.

Nearly 1,000 student delegates, including hosts, from 16 colleges competed in various categories such as model making, designs and cultural events. Competition was the most keen in the South India Design Contest and this year, the participants had to make a model for an `institute of digital design.'

The first, second and third prize winners will get cash prizes of Rs. 50,000, Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 5,000 respectively.

There were 47 entries and the winners would be selected by a jury comprising eminent architects. Mr. Thirumeni said they had sent a brief about the design to the students well in advance and the stress was on sustainable architecture for green buildings.

During the three-day event, which started on Saturday, students attended workshops on terracotta, interactive sessions with architects on model- making and presentations on low-cost housing and other themes.
