CHENNAI: : Cultural programmes depicting the freedom movement, patriotic songs and speeches on Gandhism marked the inauguration of the centenary celebrations of the Satyagraha at the Gandhi Mandapam here on Sunday. Satyagraha as a weapon to fight injustice was born on September 11, 1906, at a meeting organised by Gandhi at Empire Theatre in Johannesburg. Madras High Court judge M. Karpagavinayagam, who inaugurated the celebrations, called upon the youth to imbibe the spirit of the movement. "The celebrations are meant to carry the message of truth and non-violence to the youth," he said. V.K. Sthanunathan, secretary, Thakkar Bapa Vidyalaya, said Gandhian principles were more relevant today. Kadar Batcha, principal, New College, said following the Gandhian way was good not only for India but also for the whole world. A special postal cover was brought out. Panner Selvam, Postmaster-General, Chennai City Region, handed over copies of the cover to Mr. Karpagavinayagam and others. G. Ram Mohan, president, Committee for Celebration of Satyagraha Movement, spoke.
