GUNTUR: Minister for Cooperation and Transport, Kanna Lakshmi Narayana, on Sunday evening held discussions with the Guntur-I and II MLAs -- Sheik Subhani and Tadisetti Venkata Rao, the PCC General Secretary, Rayapati Srinivas, and other local leaders to make the rebels retire from the contest. The Minister said the City Congress president, Mada Radhakrishna, and other leaders were talking to the rebels, who were still in the race in some divisions of the Guntur Municipal Corporation. "Some leaders might not have got ticket now, but they will be given preference in the nominated posts soon if they withdraw from the race now," Mr. Lakshmi Narayana said. The PCC general secretary was confident of Congress candidates' victory from 80 per cent of the seats in the GMC. All Congress workers must work for the victory of the official candidates, he said. The DCC president, Muppalaneni Seshagiri Rao, refuted the charges of the TDP that the Congress was trying to win by adopting dubious methods like getting contestants withdrawn and threatening them.
